Abstract:This paper discusses the various surveillance networks established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to monitor illness that results from the use of FDA-regulated products. More specifically, this paper primarily looks at surveillance systems established to monitor foodborne illness, antimicrobial resistance, and vaccines. Also discussed are potential gaps in the systems, the systems’ reliance on state and local public health departments, and the systems’ role in fighting the growing threat of bioterrorism.
