Title: A Timeless Journey: Food and Ritual as Belief in Mythology and Society [redacted version] (2007 Third Year Paper)
Author(s): John K. Lobato
Subject & Subject keywords: Food and Drug Law "mythology"
Abstract:Food is mankind’s spiritual connection to the gods. Mythology, on the other hand, is mankind’s attempt at explaining the world that surrounds him. Throughout history societies have placed religious and cultural significance on the food they grow, consume, and celebrate. The assignment of such importance to their food and drink means that societies also create a great number of explanations for the origin, growth, and sustainability of their method of livelihood. This Paper seeks to analyze the portrayals of food in ancient mythology, and, at times, even connecting the ancient practices to the cultural practices in which mankind still engages. By exploring the mythology regarding the origins of food, the mythology of growth and rebirth, the cultural and ritual practices of a number of ancient societies, and finally aspects of legal regulation, this Paper examines the spiritual connection of man to the gods and his food, explaining the significance of various rites and rituals that may seem archaic by today’s standards.
